Mental Health Data
He Kākano Āhau Cabin
Building Project
Early in the year, the He Kākano
Āhau team presented at the
National Access and Choice
Network hui about their new
streamlined reporting system.
In November 2024, the He
Kākano Āhau programme trialled
a new cabin building initiative
targeted at 16 – 24-year-old
taitamariki.
He Kākano Āhau is a Tai Tokerau
wide programme involving eight
organisations using various PMS
and reporting templates. To
improve accuracy and ef昀椀ciency,
the team created a new Microsoft
form and automated a Power BI
reporting dashboard that updates
daily and removes the need for
monthly reporting.
The pilot, run by contractor
Watts Collective, taught a
small group of young people
basic construction skills, as
well as encouraging them to
develop their sense of personal
responsibility, social skills, and
learning how to give and take
direction. By working together
as a team, they experienced
a sense of achievement and
accomplishment, helping to build
something tangible and useful.
Youth mental health kaimahi can
now access up to date information
on referrals and session data,
and need to spend less time on
administrative tasks, freeing them
up to spend their time in more
meaningful and impactful ways.
When not working on the cabin,
they were given support to
prepare their CVs and inspired to
start thinking about future goals
and pathways into education or
employment.
Lifestyle Medicine in
Clinical Practice

Dr Manger is a clinical and
academic General Practitioner
with a focus on lifestyle and social
determinants. He is the Academic
Lead of the Postgraduate
Degrees in Lifestyle Medicine at
James Cook University College
of Medicine and Dentistry. The

of Lifestyle Medicine in treating
chronic diseases, assessing
and prescribing in practice, and
implementing Models of Care.
